Celebrate Our Opening

To celebrate we are inviting our friends, neighbors and partners to an event in the Leach Botanical Garden Manor house, 5:30 to 8:00pm Tuesday September 21st. Please join us, Portland City Commissioner Nick Fish, Metro Councilor Robert Liberty, and other public officials for an evening of light food and drinks, socializing, and news and plans for future Portland Audubon's programs, trips and events in East Metro. How many people bike, walk, and skateboard on Gresham streets & trails? Help conduct counts or surveys on trail & sidewalk use in Gresham as part of a nationwide effort

Even if you don't volunteer, please show-up and be counted at one of the locations below if you bike, walk, skateboard, or rollerblade on the trails or streets in the Gresham area. Ed.

Volunteers needed

Gresham is participating in a nationwide effort to document the number of people biking, walking, skateboarding, and rollerblading on trails and local streets. As part of that effort, City staff is asking for volunteers to help conduct counts and surveys.

The counts will be conducted September 14th, 15th, and 16th from 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., and September 18th and 19th from 9 to 11 a.m. The City has identified 18 locations where counts will be taken:

Count or Survey?

Volunteers can choose to conduct counts or conduct a short survey. The surveys well help provide information on trip distance, why people use trails, and what types of trials they prefer.

Your participation in this effort will help the City gain valuable information on walking and bicycling:

• Baseline data: How many people are biking? Walking? Where? What are the volume trends from year to year?
• What is the return on investment in bike lanes, trails and sidewalks: How many people use bike/pedestrian facilities after they are built?
• How can safety be improved: Certain locations have high numbers of bike/pedestrian crashes, but what is the risk exposure rate? Is it high or low relative to bike/pedestrian volumes? How should safety improvements be prioritized?

Property owners, stakeholders and interested parties are invited to attend a community forum about the Historic Certified Local Government project, which supports Gresham's efforts to preserve its sites, buildings and objects that have historical significance. The project will enable the city to be designated by the State as a Certified Local Government (CLG).

The meeting will include:

• An open house from 6:30-7:00PM
• A presentation at 7:00PM
• A question and answer period

Corridor Districts Review Development Code Improvement Project City Council unanimously approves amending Development Code

The City Council unanimously approved amending the Development Code regarding issues from the 2009 Development Code Improvement Project and the 2009 Corridor Districts Review project at its hearing on June 15, 2010. The enactment reading will occur on July 6, 2010, with an effective date of August 5, 2010. The approved language may be found here under “June 15 Public Hearing.”

Project Receives Award

The City has been awarded the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association’s (OAPA) Professional Achievement in Planning Award for the Residential Districts Review project.

This award recognizes a planning project of exceptional merit. The Residential Districts Review was a Council Work Plan project that established two new land use districts, promoted residential lot size compatibility and ensured residential density was located in appropriate locations. The project also created an innovative housing demonstration project code.

Show your support Gresham Parks Commission to consider off-leash dog park proposal

Many cities the sizes of Gresham have off-leash dog parks that provide a real convenience and source of enjoyment to dog owners and their pets. These dog parks offer a safe and clean environment by providing an alternative to dog owners who might otherwise let their best friend run loose -- presenting a hazard to their pets and people.

Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 6:30PM the Gresham Parks Commission will consider a proposal for an off-leash dog park. This is not a dog park meeting, but rather a meeting to encourage the Commission to pass a dog park proposal.

Interested persons are encouraged to attend this meeting.

Property owners, stakeholders and interested parties are invited to attend a community forum for the Rockwood Design Standards project. This project is intended to implement the vision for Rockwood by establishing an urban design framework and then creating regulations to ensure that the physical environment in Rockwood—its buildings, streetscapes, pedestrian environments and open spaces—match that vision for a quality place. The project regulations will also:

• Promote a sense of community and livability
• Identify elements of good building and site design
• Support the City's sustainability goals
• Address safety issues

This forum is intended to introduce the project, evaluate the draft principles and establish an urban form for the heart of Rockwood that will inform the development of design and policy recommendations. The evening will include an open house at 6:30, a presentation and large group discussion starting at 6:45, and small group work sessions to conclude the evening.
