The Police Activities League invites kids, ages 8-14 to attend the twenty-Second Annual PAL Sports Camp. Local police officers, high school and college coaches from the surrounding area will work together to make the camp a unique experience for youth. Officers and coaches will work with campers to develop specific sports skills and foster good sportsmanship.

Cost is $50 per child. Reduced rates of $25 are available for families who qualify for the free or reduced lunch program during the school year. Transportation available upon request.

Meet at Gresham City Hall Plaza at 9:00 AM (next to the Gresham City Hall MAX Station). All walks start at 9:00AM sharp. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water.

These Family Walks, lead by the Gresham Regional Center Transportation Management Association, will cover a couple miles at an appropriate pace suitable for families. Walks will take 1 1/2 hours and will return to the same starting location.

Rockwood Building, NE 181st & Couch

The Rockwood Building Will Bring Eight Social Services Under One Roof

Making Rockwood a better place

For years the grassy vacant lot on NE 181st Ave near Burnside served only an occasional traveling carnival or Christmas tree vendor.

Now, that lot is being transformed into a Multi-Service Center to serve area
families in need.

The new three-story $17 million Rockwood Building will host eight social service providers plus a community room on the first floor, and 47 apartments on the two floors above. Fifteen of those apartments will be reserved for homeless families.

Ground floor agencies will provide day care, employment assistance and Head Start classes, among other services. The new building is expected to be a hub for residents in and around Gresham’s Rockwood neighborhood.

Human Solutions, a social service agency with offices in Portland and east Multnomah County, is coordinating the project.

Cold Temperatures, Snow, Freezing Rain and High Winds are Dangerous What will you do without lights? How will you stay warm? What will you eat?

Winter is quickly approaching, so now is the perfect time to start thinking about winter storm preparation. Household emergency supplies should include enough food, water and supplies to last four days without power or help.

2010, Wet and wild winter predicted

A recent story in the Portland Tribune said Portland area residents are in for a wet and wild winter according to a series of forecasts presented by members of the Oregon chapter American Meteorological Society.

Two years ago an arctic blast delivered a series of three storms that began December 14, 2008 and kept a grip on the area for over two weeks. Portland reported six days where the temperature never got above freezing with high winds, blowing snow, and numerous road closures. Portland General Electric estimated 60,000 customers were without electricity on December 21st. And, on December 23, the airport reported a whopping 10" of snow in one day making it the snowiest December on record.

The 2010 Farmers’ Almanac claims this winter will see more days of shivery conditions: a winter during which temperatures will average below normal for about three-quarters of the nation. Western Washington, Oregon, and northwest California should expect above-normal snowfall in most places. The coldest (and snowiest) periods will occur in mid-December and mid- to late February.

AccuWeather.com Chief Long-Range Meteorologist Joe Bastardi is predicting that the worst of winter's cold and snow will be from the Pacific Northwest to the western Great Lakes. "That will put cities like Portland and Seattle colder and snowier this year".
