Starting in April, demolition will begin to make way for construction of a new three-story, 53,000 square foot building for the Sunrise Rockwood Charter School at 19034 SE Stark Street in West Gresham.

The new 700 student K-12 school will have twenty-eight classrooms, a student commons, administrative offices, auditorium, food services, plus covered and open outdoor play areas.

Rockwood Community Development Corporation, the project's developer, says the Corbett Charter School Association has agreed on a lease to create the new school, which will border E. Burnside and S.E. Stark Street along the MAX Blue Line.

The success of the nationally acclaimed Corbett Charter School, which shares school buildings inside the Corbett School District, has created a waiting list of new students (mostly from east Multnomah county) wanting to enroll in the highly successful program. High demand and lack of space is one of the reasons for building the new school.

The Gresham Police Activities League Center will stay open at least through the end of the month.

The PAL center is an after school program for more than a hundred “at risk” children. More than 3000 children a year benefit from the program.

“We’re thrilled!” said PAL Board President Mark McGinnis. Earlier in the week he said the doors would close if the organization could not make payroll by Friday. He said that would take $20-thousand-dollars.

Without additional funding, the Greater Portland Police Activities League Program said Tuesday that it will be forced to close its centers in Portland and Gresham on Friday, Feb. 15.

Beaverton’s PAL center is expected to stay open for now.

A Tuesday press release said “the ongoing reduction of governmental funding and the economic times have placed the organization in the position to need to make this difficult decision.”

“It is with great sadness that this wonderful program may have to close,” said PAL board member Cliff Madison. “It has made a great impact in the lives of many kids in our community and has taken down many of the walls between Cops, Kids and Community. It will be missed.”

The closure will include both the Bud Monnes PAL Center (NE 172nd Av) in Gresham and the PAL Office at the Portland Police Bureau’s North Precinct.

Reynolds School District teachers beg for new blood with next superintendent

Reynolds School District teachers beg for new blood with next superintendent. Story Here!

The next Reynolds School District superintendent should respect teachers, be a knowledgeable educator and, most important, not already be working for the district.

That was the message delivered Tuesday afternoon by about two dozen teachers who spoke anonymously to the consultants hired to conduct the superintendent search.

"I am begging you, don't hire anyone in the district," one teacher said.

Reynolds School District has been in turmoil for several years, and the next superintendent will be the fourth in less than 10 years. The district and its teachers have been locked in a bitter contract battle since May (2011).
