This three-mile walk, on paved paths, begins at the "Carousel" at Riverfront Park in Salem and ends at a picnic area near the Willamette Slough. We will circle "the world" before crossing the new Peter Courtney Minto-Brown Island Bridge. It spans the Willamette River and connects with a 1,200-acre waterfowl and wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary has a variety of habitats that support many different wildlife species. Along the way, look for rabbits, raptors, bald eagles, osprey, owls, river otters, and deer. Listen for downy, hairy and Pileated woodpeckers, the largest woodpecker in North America.
We will eat our sack lunch at the Willamette Slough picnic area. Wear comfortable walking shoes, pack a lunch, and bring water and snacks. We will park at Riverfront Park and have a car shuttle parked on the island to bring drivers back to their cars to pick up their passengers on the island.
