Round-trip travel: 40 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Elevation gain: 10 feet
Suggested donation per hiker: $5
This three-mile walk begins at the Cedar Hills Recreation Center. We will walk through neighborhoods built between 1946 and 1961 that were part of the most ambitious suburban housing development ever attempted in the Northwest (2,000 homes on 800 acres). From the neighborhoods, we will enter a paved path that circles Commonwealth Lake, a 200-acre, tranquil oasis where clouds and water reflections are stunning. This man-made lake is a favorite spot for birdwatchers and photographers. Look for Great Blue Herons, cedar waxwings, green herons, widgeons, coots, Buffleheads and other wintering waterfowl. There are several viewing platforms, and Johnson Creek flows along a ditch north of the wetlands. After looping around the lake, we enter the 10-acre Foothills Park on a path lined with alders, willows, and Douglas firs.
Following our walk, we will drive a short distance to Cedar Hills Pub at Cedar Hills Crossing for lunch.
For more information about this hike please contact Ruth Cummings at 503-926-4840 or cummings0465@frontier.com.
Senior Healthy Hikers asks that participants be 50 or older. A couple wishing to hike is welcome if one member of the couple is 50 or better.
