Did you notice you only see Turkey Vultures in the metropolitan area in the spring and summer? Thats because they migrate to warmer climates in the winter, but its time to welcome them back.

Welcome Back Vulture Day is filled with fun and educational activities:

  • Meet Ruby, Portland Audubons Turkey Vulture, up close (along with many of Audubons other education birds)
  • Compare your wingspan to that of a California Condor
  • Make a crafted vulture and mask
  • Play Upchuck Chuck!
  • Learn fun vulture facts
  • Find out the differences between Old and New World vultures
  • Discover why vultures are important

Were lucky to still have good populations of Turkey Vultures in Oregon. Around the world vultures are facing hazards in the wild and their numbers are dwindling. As Natures Recyclers, they play an important role in reducing diseaseand its up to us to help

Looking for a way to get outside and make a difference in your community? Join Friends of Nadaka for our Community Planting Event to restore a healthy habitat at Nadaka Nature Park. Volunteers will be planting native shrubs like Oregon Grape, Thimbleberry, and Oceanspray. Native plantings help filter pollutants, provide shade, and improve fish and wildlife habitat.

Tools, plants, gloves, and light refreshments will be provided. Dress to work in natural areas: long pants, warm cloths, and closed-toe sturdy shoes. Please bring a water bottle and a friend!

  • St. Aidan's Episcopal Church parking lot next to Nadaka Nature Park located at 17405 NE Glisan Street Gresham, OR 97230.
  • Nadaka Nature Park’s north entrance is at NE Pacific Street and 176th. You may park in the neighborhood and follow the path through the forest to get to the picnic structure.

One spring morning in 2007, Lee Dayfield took her dog for a walk. As she passed an empty field, she saw a sign that would forever change her life. It read “for sale.”

The desolate plot of grass sat next to 10 acres ringed by a chain-link fence and barbed wire. Where others may have seen a $900,000 meadow, Dayfield saw a two-acre opportunity: a nature-based play area for the Gresham neighborhood’s children, many of them Native American.

Join Friends of Nadaka to restore a healthy habitat at Nadaka Nature Park Saturday, October 29th from 9 am to 12 pm! We will be removing invasive species such as English Ivy from the 10 acre forested portion of the park. The event will start with a brief lesson on native and invasive plant species.
