We know parks, green spaces and recreation help us maintain our quality of life while attracting families, industry and top-tier development. Those families and family-wage jobs then spread the wealth in terms of better property values, rejuvenated neighborhoods, lower crime rates, less substance abuse and fewer demands on public services.

  • We are volunteers
  • We have secured funding
  • Now we need you!

This is not a political movement, but a grass-roots one determined to build on what East Multnomah County already has going for it — beautiful vistas and buttes, great schools and engaged citizens who value economic efficiency.

Nadaka Nature Park & Garden Project, Improvements Coming in 2014

Nadaka Nature Park & Garden Project, Improvements Coming in 2014. Info here!

2013 was a very productive year for the Friends of Nadaka team which includes the Audubon Society of Portland (Audubon) and Columbia Slough Watershed Council (CSWC).

By Lee Dayfield, Friends of Nadaka

Audubon released a Cooper’s Hawk and brought their educational birds to the Nadaka Community Festival. Over 300 people attended the Festival last August. This year’s Festival will be held September 27th. You can view the release of the Cooper’s Hawk on YouTube by searching for Nadaka Nature Park.

The Nadaka Nature Park & Garden Project was awarded an Oregon State Parks grant in the amount of $523,480. These funds will be used to cover the large capital improvements such as the restrooms and covered picnic shelter.

The City is hosting a series of town hall meetings this fall to continue its Invest in Gresham discussion with the community about funding critical police and fire services, including the possibility of a voter-approved levy in May 2014.

Because of Oregon’s statewide property tax restrictions and Gresham’s low $3.61 permanent property tax rate, the City is at a defining moment in its ability to provide the level of essential police and fire services this rapidly growing, urban city needs.

Last fall the Gresham City Council established a temporary fee as an interim solution to maintain police, fire and park service levels through June 2014. With expiration of that $7.50-per month fee less than a year away, the process of a potential levy to stabilize funding for public safety long term starts now.

The state has awarded a $523,000 grant to fund improvements at Nadaka Nature Park in Gresham’s Wilkes East neighborhood.

"It is unbelievable," said Lee Dayfieid, who cried, laughed and screamed when she heard the news last week that the park, through its partnership with the city of Gresham, won the $523,480 grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

The money means that the little-known and once-neglected forested area in the middle of the city can become a full-blown neighborhood park complete with community gardens, a nature-based play area, picnic shelter and improved walking trail.

We invite you to join us at Mayor Shane Bemis' upcoming public town halls for a community conversation about the proposed Police, Fire & Parks Fee of $7.50 per month and why it’s critical to keeping the community safe and livable.

Share Your Opinion
The public can provide input and ask questions at the Town Hall meetings on Oct. 2, 3 and 10. at 6:00-7:30PM

Gresham is a great community, with one of the most efficient local governments in Oregon.

But additional revenue is needed now to keep the community safe and vibrant and the City’s financial foundation stable. That’s why this fall your City Council will consider a monthly Police, Fire & Parks Fee of $7.50 – assessed to households
