Making A Difference
Wilkes East resident Jordan Beehler is a young man with a warm smile who's interested in making the world around him a better place -- not only for himself, but for others in his community too. Jordan, an Eagle Scout with Boy Scouts of America Troop 606 is a senior at Central Catholic High School in Portland and plans to attend Oregon State University this fall.

In August 2010 Jordan began work on his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project. This project is the opportunity for an Eagle Scout to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of the community. This is the culmination of the Eagle Scout candidate's leadership training and requires significant effort on their part.

For his project Jordan choose to improve Nadaka Nature Park (located at NE 175th & NE Pacific St., in the Wilkes East Neighborhood), with the help of Jim Labbe of the Audubon Society of Portland, Todd Jones of the City of Gresham Parks, Laura Guderyahn, Watershed Restoration Coordinator, City of Gresham, Watershed Division and Lee Dayfield with Friends of Nadaka.

What started as a “bird house” project in Wilkes East Neighborhood's Metro Nature in Neighborhoods grant has turned into a passion for Jordan. Last September Jordan assisted the Audubon Society of Portland with the release of two Western Screech Owls in Nadaka Nature Park. Over the winter Jordan built four native bird houses, two owl boxes and two concrete benches for the park. Jordan has done an incredible job of coordinating this entire project and getting donations of all the materials used.

This spring Jordan and his mentors installed the two owl boxes in the forest, and the four bird houses and two concrete benches in the meadow. In addition to his work in the park, Jordan and his fellow Scouts from Troop 606 also repainted Nadaka's famous "Turtle Rock". Great improvements to the nature park for everyone (birds and people alike) to enjoy.

Thank you Jordan for all your work -- and for making our community a better place!

Scouting has been a family tradition. Jordan's older brother Andrew earned his rank of Eagle Scout in 2002.
