Halloween hauntings 2008, Old fashion fun & current events!
|
Halloween is fast approaching and every day it seems more front yards are being bedecked in sticky spider webs, soaring witches and grinning pumpkins.
In light of this year's economic situation these neighbors near NE 140th Ave & E Burnside St have combined old fashion fun with current events to make their graveyard howl this Halloween. This year's new tombstones include my IRA, the Stock Market, the Economy, and my 401k!
Now, that's scary!
Halloween History
The celebration of Halloween is rooted in ancient practices marking the end of the harvest season and honoring the spirits of those who died in the preceding year. Halloween as we know it today had its beginnings in Europe in the late middle ages, when it was held on the day before All Saints Day (Nov. 1), known as Allhallows or Hallowmas. The celebration became linked to superstitions and the supernatural, and decorations continue to focus on images we associate with the supernatural – ghosts, witches, vampires, werewolves – and generally creepy stuff – spiders, bats, graveyards.
According to legend, jack-o-lanterns were first carved in medieval Scotland where people used turnips, not pumpkins. The practice apparently grew from British folk tales about a deceased man who was doomed to walk the earth carrying a lantern because his soul was not allowed into heaven or hell. The orange of the pumpkins and black of darkness were the inspiration for Halloween’s traditional color scheme.
