2008 Wilkes East Nadaka Park Clean-Up improves visibility, yields new sign, many fond memories
|
On Saturday, July 26th the Wilkes East Neighborhood Association (WENA) held a cleanup at Nadaka Park clearing underbrush and lifting the canopy. The Gresham Parks Dept worked with WENA volunteers to advertise this event and provide the necessary tools (rakes, clippers, etc), as well as support staff. Over 35 people volunteered during the three hour event. Jazzy Bagel (Main St & Powell, Gresham) provided bagels and Starbucks provided coffee for the volunteers so they didn't run out of steam. "Everyone had a great time, and there was such a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day seeing how much underbrush had been cleared near the front of the park" said Lee Dayfield, WENA Coordinator.
Grant Money for Improvements
This cleanup was done in conjunction with a grant provided by the City of Gresham for improvements at Nadaka Park. With the grant money there was a requirement of volunteer payback time of 40 hours. We far exceeded this having 90.5 hours of volunteer time! The grant money was used to repair a portion of fence along NE Pacific St, remove the barbed wire fence top, and purchase a name sign for the park. The new large wood sign should be installed sometime in October.
Things Remembered
A number of the volunteers were former Camp Fire Girls who had enjoyed Nadaka Park as children and remembered special things about the park; such as Turtle Rock. It was fun hearing about the activities that once took place at Nadaka.
Next Nadaka Park Clean-Up
This cleanup was such a success WENA applied for an INTEL-SOLV Clean & Green Project at Nadaka Park. The next cleanup at Nadaka Park will be held October 11, 2008 9:00AM-1:00PM. Click Here to Register Now!.
