Multnomah County was scheduled to build a full service Justice Facility, including courthouses, community space, sheriff's office and other facilities in Rockwood. HELP THEM WIN A SMALL BUSINESS GRANT & KEEP PARK PLACE COFFEE IN BUSINESS!
A plea from Park Place Coffee's owner:
"I'd like to ask for your help in helping me win a business grant for the cafe. As you may know, I'm looking at closing at the end of the lease unless something changes monetarily. THIS COULD BE IT! I've applied for a business grant, and the winner will be partially determined by the number of votes my submittal receives. Anywhere from $10-25,000. There are so many more things Park Place Coffee can do for the community if I could get this business grant."
"At the bottom it will ask if you find the story INSPIRATIONAL/USEFUL. When you choose one, it will ask you to register by setting up an identity. (It is their way of making sure all votes are valid. This contest is through INTUIT - the makers of Quickbooks and TurboTax - not a fly-by-night.). I know sometimes people are wary of registering, but the process doesn't require much information and it could make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!"
"PLEASE take the time to vote and possibly keep Park Place Coffee in the Rockwood community -- and please ask everyone you know to vote too! I suggest you vote for the CATEGORY: Inspirational and Useful."
When: Thursday May 28, 2009 07:30AM - 08:30AM Where: Nadaka Nature Park

Join us for a morning stroll
In celebration of Great Blue Heron Week, join Jim Labbe with the Audubon Society of Portland and Lee Dayfield with Wilkes East Neighborhood Association for a morning stroll through Nakada Nature Park in West Gresham. We’ll explore the natural and human history of this unique neighborhood nature park and learn about efforts afoot to expand the park, improve access and environmental interpretation, and enhance its wildlife habitat. We’ll also begin the documenting of bird species inhabiting the park and discuss the value of urban natural areas to avian biodiversity.
Definition (Wikipedia): Naturescaping (or nature scaping) is a term that refers to a method of landscaping that allows people and nature to coexist. By incorporating certain plants, especially native ones, into ones yard, one can attract beneficial insects, birds, and other creatures, and help keep our rivers and streams healthy. Extensive urban growth and urban sprawl over the last few decades has had a significant impact on habitat that birds and other wildlife once called home. Homeowners with yards have a unique opportunity to curtail this loss of habitat by creating their own backyard wildlife sanctuary. Read more.
Workshop Description
Naturescaping is the practice of designing a landscape so that it reduces water use, stormwater runoff, and pollution without sacrificing splendor. Plus, it saves you time, money, and energy – all while providing a beautiful habitat for birds, wildlife, and you. Naturescaping Basics introduces attendees to their connection with the watershed, native plants of the PNW, pollution prevention, and other core concepts of naturescaping. Advanced registration is required. Space is limited, so don't delay. Click here to register!
In this introductory workshop we introduce the concept of naturescaping. We also discuss time and maintenance savings, reduction/elimination of water and chemical use, increasing and improving wildlife habitat, watershed stewardship, and basic site or project planning, as well as many other great gardening tips.
