Come to Lao Buddhist Center to learn about pollinators. Join Johnson Creek Watershed Council and East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District (EMSWCD) for a free workshop, and check out a recently planted native plant meditation garden at the Lao Buddhist Center.

Gardens are pollinated by a variety of insects that help flowers set seed and help fruit & vegetable plants produce an edible harvest. Mostly familiar with European honey bees, few of us realize the numerous flies, beetles, moths and butterflies that might literally be at our doorsteps, providing critical pollination services. In this workshop you will learn about the different kinds of pollinators that might be living in your garden, discover a plant palette to help attract and support pollinators, and go beyond the bloom to consider ways to provide shelter, water, nesting, and overwintering sites.

Register online.

Here's a great volunteer opportunity for the flower gardener in you!

Help rebuild the Pollinator Garden at Vance Park while you learn the importance of bees and how they benefit everyone. Volunteer as little or as much time as you like. Details below:

Hello, fellow Gresham residents -

My name is Celeste, and I'll be working with the City of Gresham to restore and enhance the Pollinator Peace Garden at Vance Park. Beginning in April, I will also be giving scheduled talks there on native bees to interested members of the community. We'll be posting the dates and times for these talks in the coming weeks. We hope to see many of you in the Pollinator Peace Garden during the bee season!

We are in the planning stages for the garden right now, and have two upcoming work parties at Vance Park to prepare the site and to plant lots of pollinator-friendly flowers. The first work day is scheduled for February 25th and the second for March 18th, both events occurring from 10 to 2. We are seeking volunteers from the Gresham community to help us in the gardens on these dates. Just show up with some garden gloves, water bottle and a willing spirit!

So I'm looking forward to meeting and working with all of you to make the Pollinator Peace Garden a great resource for the Gresham Community. We could use lots of able-bodied gardening enthusiasts at the gardens on February 25th, so please join us for however much time you can spare between 10:00 and 2:00. Bee there or bee square!

Refreshments and tools will be provided on both work days - Feb. 25th and March 18th. Come join us, Rain or Shine: 1400 SE 182nd Ave, Gresham. The garden is the fenced area on the north western portion of the park off of 182nd.

  • Round-trip travel: by MAX light rail
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Elevation gain: Nominal
  • Suggested donation per hiker: All-day MAX ticket + ZooLights Admission (see details below)

For the 28th year, the Oregon Zoo invites visitors to brighten their nights at ZooLights, where more than 1.6 million brightly colored lights transform the zoo into a walk through a winter wonderland. In addition, we may be able to catch a glimpse of Nora, the playful year-old polar bear cub who arrived at the Oregon Zoo a few months ago.

Well travel by MAX to Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery for happy hour and dinner. After eating, we'll re-board MAX and travel to the zoo stop, where we will disembark and walk to the Oregon Zoo. The price of the Value Night ZooLights ticket is $9.95 for those under age 65 or $7.95 for age 65+; however, if you show your MAX ticket at the entrance gate, you will receive a $1.50 discount on the admission price. Once inside, you are free to wander among the ZooLights either with the group or on your own. The total walking distance will probably be less than 3 miles. We will meet in front of the gift shop at 8:00 PM to gather for the MAX ride back to Gresham.

Park your car at the City Hall MAX Station and purchase your all-day MAX ticket ($5 for those under age 65 or $2.50 for age 65+) in advance so that we can all board the train shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Please note: if the weather forecast for December 7 is decidedly nasty, this walk may be changed to one of the remaining ZooLights Value Nights. If a change is made, you will be notified by email
