Come to Lao Buddhist Center to learn about pollinators. Join Johnson Creek Watershed Council and East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District (EMSWCD) for a free workshop, and check out a recently planted native plant meditation garden at the Lao Buddhist Center. Gardens are pollinated by a variety of insects that help flowers set seed and help fruit & vegetable plants produce an edible harvest. Mostly familiar with European honey bees, few of us realize the numerous flies, beetles, moths and butterflies that might literally be at our doorsteps, providing critical pollination services. In this workshop you will learn about the different kinds of pollinators that might be living in your garden, discover a plant palette to help attract and support pollinators, and go beyond the bloom to consider ways to provide shelter, water, nesting, and overwintering sites.Register online. For more information about this event, contact Alexis Barton at 503-652-7477, ext. 102 or alexis@jcwc.org.

Learn to Naturescape Naturescaping is the practice of designing (or redesigning) your landscape so that it reduces water use and decreases stormwater runoff while saving you time, money and energy. This introductory workshop introduces the core concepts of naturescaping, and also explores:

  • Pollution prevention through the reduction/elimination of chemical use.
  • How native plants naturally resist pests & tolerate drought conditions while attracting native birds, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators to your garden
  • Basic site planning principals, and many other great natural gardening & design tips.

Even if you decide to enlist the help of a contractor, youll have the framework to make decisions and effectively communicate the vision you have for your yard. Class will visit a nearby naturescaped project to see design principles in action. Youll receive a comprehensive workbook to help you get started.

The historic Irvington area is one of Portlands most beautiful neighborhoods. More than 75 homes have been designated as historically significant, ranging from Mediterranean mansions to English cottages to Prairie Craftsmansome having been turned into B&Bs.Irvington is an early example of a streetcar suburb; it contains the largest, most diverse, and intact collections of Queen Anne, Arts and Crafts, and Colonial Revival style residences in the city of Portland, as well as the state of Oregon. In 2010, Irvington was designated an historic district and was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Our walk will be about 3.5 to 4.0 miles long, with a chance to view many of the historic homes and at least eight heritage trees. Its a flat and comfortable walk, but you may wish to bring some water and a snack. We have also arranged for a guided tour of the Westminster Episcopalian Church, where the pew cushions are hand needlepoint(ed) and they match the beautiful stained glass windows. Finally, we will stop at the Broadway Grill and Brewery to satisfy our hunger and quench our thirst.
