Free Event! This year the Audubon Society’s annual celebration is coming to Nadaka with a family-friendly event, including lots of fun activities to help kids of all ages learn about turkey vultures.

  • Meet Ruby, the Audubon Society’s education vulture, up close.
  • Compare your wingspan to that of a California Condor.
  • Make a crafted vulture and mask.
  • Learn fun vulture facts

Did you notice you only see turkey vultures in the metropolitan area in the spring and summer? That’s because they migrate to warmer climates in the winter, but it’s time to welcome them back. We’re lucky to still have good populations of turkey vultures in Oregon. Around the world vultures, “nature’s recyclers,” are facing hazards in the wild, and their numbers are dwindling.
As "Nature's Recyclers," they play and important role in reducing disease --- and it's up to us to help save them.

  • Meeting many of Portland Audubon's other educational birds
  • Play "Upchuck Chuck!"
  • Find out the differences between Old and New World vultures
  • Discover why vultures are important

Come and help us celebrate the beauty of vultures!

Do you know what to do in the case of disaster?
Even if you think you do, there’s always new information to be learned. The city is holding a listening session from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at City Council Chambers, 1333 N.W. Eastman Parkway, with the topic of emergency preparedness to help the community prepare for natural disasters.
The session will be hosted by Council President Mario Palmero and Councilors Jerry Hinton and Lori Stegmann.
An 8.9 quake, like the one in Japan in 2011, is only possible in subduction zones, according to the city’s disaster preparedness information. The only U.S. subduction zones in the U.S. are in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
“I think about an earthquake and I think, ‘Oh, I can’t get water, but I don’t think in terms of I can’t drive because the roads will be literally destroyed or washed away -- that just drove it home even more that people need to make sure at a minimum that they have water,” Stegmann said. “People need to know they could be completely isolated.”
Free refreshments, interpreters and child care will be available.
